The project uses low-cost IQAir air quality sensors for monitoring outdoor air quality in Latin American cities where Aires Nuevos is present in areas where young children reside and play.
These sensors measure fine particles (PM2.5), coarse particles (PM10), carbon dioxide (CO2), temperature, humidity and external Air Quality Index (AQI) data.
Particular matter (PM) is a major component of air pollution and is responsible for a wide range of diseases and millions of premature deaths around the world.
MP 2.5 means fine particles with a diameter of 2.5 microns. They are invisible to the naked eye, yet they can be seen as smog particles in heavily polluted locations.
Most of the cities monitored by Aires Nuevos sensors in Latin America exceed recent WHO guidelines, confirming that there is no safe place for children in terms of air quality.
